I've gotten better!  You only get about half now.  Though you did have a streak of like 15 in a row at one point...

on the good side, the unit IS removed from the battle, and you starts with -1 staff, ITS ALL PART OF THE PLAN!

Oh, I was usually just running my alchy in to do it, so usually resulted in me staffing heroes back to base and having to run all the way to his base again.  Really didn't help me much >.>
