Holy is just an adjective that is often used to preface a religious deity, however is not tied directly to it.  The examples you gave are good.

Oh my God is accepted in modern society, however saying inside a church would be frowned upon.  Which is probably the best test of whether you are being "proper"

weird (maybe fun?) fact; in Denmark we say 'sgu' which has just about the same meaning as 'fuck' or is used in the same way. The actual meaning of the word is 'inshallah' or 'if god wills it' !
