Get to know the community week III!
« on: June 24, 2013, 12:06:31 pm »
Welcome all to week III of "Get to know the community!!"

Last week, month, time we discussed what type of movies we enjoyed, and what a great time we had indeed!

This week, we will be embracing our inner nerd to discuss what we value most in a video game, and share what our top 5 video games are.

Please note that I do understand a game can be terrible if it has the greatest story ever but lacks the gameplay to bring out such brilliance.  Thus, ceteris paribus, I will ask that you choose the one that defines a great game the best for you.

I like PvP esports kind of games, e.g. Warcraft, Counter-Strike, Quake etc.

I prefer to read a book or watch a movie instead of playing single-player games.

I would say it really depends on my mood (though voted story.)  There are a ton of highly addictive games that I spend a ton of time playing for reasons other than the story.  Civilization is probably the best one that I can think of.  There's not story there but the gameplay mechanics are just addictive and a blast.

As GM said, pvp games like WC3 are extremely fun too.  Overall though, there's just nothing better than a great story with solid mechanics behind it.  Something like Final Fantasy X will forever hold a spot in my heart for how amazing the cinematics and story was.

OH SHIT YOU ADDED A BOOBS CATEGORY AFTER I ALREADY VOTED WTF!!!

Btw I voted story.  I like multiplayer and all, but my favorite games are, in this order:
Chrono Trigger
Zelda, Ocarina of Time,
Super Mario RPG
Final Fantasy 7
Warcraft III
Super Smash Brothers Melee

takes till #5 to even touch a multiplayer game... There's something about a storybased video game that you don't get in a movie - the whole being in the story aspect I like very much.  Especially when you get to name the main character.

I'd say story and PVP. When compiling my list, I noticed that stood out as the main reasons for liking these games.

My 5 favorites would be:

-Warcraft 3 (Obviously)
-Mass Effect 1 (2 and 3 are also good but the story of 1... is just amazing)
-Starsiege (My favorite mech game of all time... mostly because they have a story line to play as the evil AI mechs... and its amazing. Multiplayer was also great)
-Unreal Tournament 2004 (I just loved everything about this game. The tournament, music, gameplay, modding community... etc)
-Starcraft 1 (Its a classic, man)

Really interesting topic here. my order of what makes a good gam for me in descending order:

1.Gameplay
2. Graphics
3. Story
4. Multiplayer
5. all the other aspects

Apart from Wc3 TFT , i played following games during the last couple months

SC2: Hots ( Only the campagin but it was amazing and it has  a little feeling of wc3 since it uses same game controls (hotkeys, shortcuts,.etc)

Diablo III - great single and multiplayer game , but it got to hard in 4th game difficulty and i surrendered)

Call Of Duty series in general , great and cinematic story and action packed gameplay in campaign and in multiplayer. (atm im playing CoD: BO 2 multiplayer, and its really addictive)

Max payne 3 - i liked the old parts pretty much but this here is not that good, gameplay did not change and it has way too much cutscenes.

I played also some other games but none of them really impressed me.

Top 5 games for me, no particular order:

Zelda: Ocarina of Time
WC3
Final Fantasy X
Dark Cloud II
Civilization III

This list is purely based off of enjoyment factor and nostalgia, and shouldn't be taken for some heavy critical review of the games.

Games I've played within the last year or so:

WC3
Civ5
Halo 4
Portal 2
Rome: Total War
Borderlands I & II
Rift (soon)
Dota 2

I definitely agree with these two!

I will add Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and Disciples 2. I love the turn-based strategy games and these two (especially the second one) have amazing gameplay and story (the Disciples universe is truly deep). Many hours were spent on these games when I was younger (uh-hu)! :)

Voted story.

Of course I've spent the most TIME playing wc3 over the past decade. But it is mostly my competitive spirit and the community that has kept me around, not necessarily the game itself. Therefore, it does not make my top 5 games. My top 5 are all RPGs, which is my favorite genre of game.

#1: Tales of Symphonia
#2: Chrono Cross
#3: Chrono Trigger
#4: Final Fantasy VI (Mog!!!)
#5: Xenoblade Chronicles
