What you liked the most about this season:
inactive for a long time, I remember only some of the first seasons. nonetheless: * the chance for every player to compete, better than some qualis I remember where lots of good players were left out * the admin team doing a very good job and with the right principles * lots of strong players and a variety of playstyles * elves succeeding What you liked the least about this season: * as ever, long and boring chatcraft * players not scheduling, abandoning without notice - lack of respect in general. subs, conficts, it all fits here Changes you want to see for S18: * dedicated players and a nicer atmosphere, it's just a small community playing their favourite vintage game * more discussion on the games. no-one cares about your personal grudge or uber skills * use of good new maps after they've been thoroughly tested Additional comments: have a nice x-mas holiday xD 4
General Discussion / Re: unofficial WC3 overall history thread« on: November 18, 2013, 05:18:18 am »
Nice thread. Slythe you are one wall of texter ! My brief recall of the early days:
Started playing RTS when the first one, Dune 2, came out in 1992. A pc (adv./strategy) gamer since the 80s, I was psyched when the 'right game' came out. A small company called Blizzard then copied and polished that game to create warcraft I. I played a lot of those, leading up to C&C 1v1 wars through analogue dial-up, then organizing big lan tourneys in university in duke nukem 3d and warcraft II - circa 1997. Didn't play much as a uni student, save for GTA I and some quake 3 online. No starcraft or anything else. When ROC came out I was finishing the MSc thesis, which was followed by a few months of good life. Then one day at my brother's house, I saw him playing ROC online, controlling things very fast. Surprised at the level of play, I took up playing bnet. Having not lost much at any RTS until then, bnet was a proper slap. x-broodwar players would run over me. My brother's friends at the net cafe next to my house were the best players in the country (mouz players panic and vankor), and I wondered what it would take to reach panic's (a 350+ apm ud) gameplay. After an RT learning stint I ventured into solo, confident that I'd be one the best with minimal practice (!). I was improving constantly but consistently lost to the good players. Elf mirror loses hurt the most and those I remember - vs a kid called eso]nl.grubby or sth ^^, a guy called apm70 who had apm268 (remember deadman?), but I did manage to beat a player I respected a lot, didi8, once. I learned a lot from didi's reps and I think he would make a good ffa player. FFA attracted me since the first days of trying bnet, since the wc2 lan games I did while at uni were always FFA games. Back then there was a team FFA option which was quite funny. in ROC you could level to 6 through creeps and use starfall with inv. pot so elf was very strong. What followed is a decade of maybe three or four stints lasting a few months to a year, mostly FFA only. I played northrend which was competitive but full of hackers, pre-teamers and tower/hoarding/manipping players. This made me dislike chatting and the long stalled games, which discouraged me from applying for FML because most reps I saw were like that. I keep coming back to this game and FFA in particular as there is nothing else like it. FFA is complex and fun and you need multiple skills to do well, while there is no other game that offers the gametype in that fashion (heroes make the difference here). I remember a lot of good players and games but this is already too long xD 5

Last hacker I met on bnet, when told that I'll report him (which I did), said "wc3 keys cost $5, go report, I get others". I don't know where they do cost $5, but you can use the response if anyone's still missing them !

Seksi sure has a knack for making friends xD
Lightweight you are wrong on not being missed. I am fond of your laid back attitude, humor, and game skills enough to make you one of the best ffa players there is. Is irritating seksi, though, that big of an accomplishment? You spent years playing together with a small community, having fun with an old game, and you decide to lift the finger on everyone due to a grudge? cmon, it's not like we like every single player on bnet or wc3. It's full of questionable characters to say the least, people that never had sex and what have you. You can't like everyone in a community but you can respect the whole of it. 8
General Discussion / Re: [GProxy++] HOW TO« on: October 26, 2013, 07:31:01 am »
not sure, but I think after 60secs or so other players have the option to drop you. so, even though you make it after 60 but before 180 you still can't reconnect. Out of my 6-7 'minor' discs so far using it, only once a guy waited for me (while losing!) and I reconnected, gproxy couldn't do it in the others (all < 180sec)

Interviews / Re: [Interview] The Long Overdue One« on: October 25, 2013, 06:18:04 am »
Interesting, going through the process of using proxies and avoiding using old chat He did play human on the bot though. Had to be some player with a lot of fml-ffa experience, winning with elf is not easy.
Wonder how many more older/retired players roam the bot under a smurf. 11

ffa sure is a weird gametype ! I'm pretty sure many solo players stared in disbelief when they first saw this league. there is no actual non-gaming sport that resembles it ( though I would be interested in some ffa rugby ). as for gaming, well quake tourneys were always 1v1.
even on popular sport, there are two schools of thought. a good example is my favourite one, basketball. nba uses a loong season, long bo7 playoffs, and a bo7 final. winner is usually the best team. but, in europe they play their long season, do some bo5 playoffs, but the semis and finals are one game - the final 4 -, which is intense and very interesting, with surprises being commonplace. Ten years ago they tried to change it up to a bo5 and they quickly changed it back next year. point is, a final is a final. champion's league and euroleague are no fools. ffa, as you mentioned, has extra reasons to have a single final. maybe fml could have a couple of extra games leading up to the final somehow.
