Back from the dead, where do I play?
« on: October 18, 2013, 04:10:59 pm »
Hi, what's new in the world of FFA?

I'm not seeing any b.net ladder action happening, but I guess there is an FML ladder of some sort? How do I play it?

Anything else I should know?

Do I have to register for the PlayFFA ladder somewhere? Or is it automatic if I participate in games?

automatic, however if you get any bugs you need to register on their forums to report them.

Oh yeah, btw, the Ladder is not as easy as it sounds. There are a bunch of decent players who play regularly. The guys who have sick micro and have FFA sense still put up good stats on the ladder (like seksi, maga) but if your micro needs some work - expect a challenge. Still a lot of noobs though too.

If you select maps carefully it's cake.  Add in the fact that you can dodge opponents easily and you'll lose rarely.  If you play in the spirit it's meant and try new maps, play vs everyone, etc then it becomes more challenging due to the randomness factor.

+1

If you select maps carefully it's cake.  Add in the fact that you can dodge opponents easily and you'll lose rarely.  If you play in the spirit it's meant and try new maps, play vs everyone, etc then it becomes more challenging due to the randomness factor.

This is somewhat true.  You can select maps carefully and avoid the top players for a better record but once you get to a high rank (top ~25) the amount of exp you gain is very minimal if not playing against good player(s).  Even then, there are many 'surprise' players I have run into that have no previous stats or recognizable handle but have either strong micro or strong overall FFA sense - or both.  You will still have to deal with unbelievable situations at times where amazing moments of micro and/or macro will be needed to survive (multiple players at you early, denying your first expo for most of the game, clawing your way out somehow only to face another good player who had free game for 45 minutes etc).  The different situations that are presented on the bot make for great games some times and very little predictability.  Of course it is true there will be times with all noobs that should be a free win but the circumstances are not consistent.

I can't speak for others, but I rarely skip a map (minus Hurricane Isles, Gold Rush at 3 AM, etc) and play every game as they come.  I don't dodge anyone but instead seek out good players for the best reward opportunity and challenge.  I have been on a tear and improved my game to its highest level - I am far better then I was even a couple months ago.

(Shameless plug) I am proud to be Rank 1 currently with a ridiculous record I've fought long and hard for that in all likeliness I couldn't repeat.  Every game has been streamed with an average of ~75 viewers at a time and upwards of 140! It has been enjoyable to play with full attention to detail and focus (something I never had done before, being 100% zoned into the game) and seeing a great improvement in my game.  There is nothing like the satisfaction of winning a game that you were literally hanging on by a thread from the jump.  I can surely say that at LEAST 10-15 games I won through the craziest circumstances that could've easily been losses.

A final note (for everyone) is the ladder at the moment is a little bit off in terms of accurate ELO.  The formula when fixing error losses has not been quite correct in that players who reported error losses generally have received too much experience in games where they would've gotten less normally.  This has been pointed out/being corrected to where soon it will better display an accurate representation.  The ladder formula is set up to promote and reward playing good players and give far less reward for playing noobs.  While the formula works as planned, the errors (that have to be adjusted by hand) have thrown the scores off some prior to the proper knowledge.  In the coming times you should be able to see the accurate representation of each player on the ladder to where players who frequently play against good opponents will be distinctly higher then those who don't even with a number of less wins.  In my opinion this is awesome.  You can win little by little against lesser players but the real prize is rewarded against better competition.

The ladder has been a tremendous success so far and continues to grow - as does the competition.  Ugri plans a new site and further development.  You'll be able to pick up an easy win here and there and be faced with real challenges at other points.  Your overall FFA game should improve as all of the elements of FFA are incorporated in a random, unpredictable FFA environment.

Welcome back

are there only 6-12 player games? No 4 player ones?
