legendaries, can be quite good.

U can have 1 per each legendary as opposed to 2 of every other card.

Some are realllly good.  Some are bad.

Hearthstone is now in OPEN Beta! Anyone can play now and download the game for free.

http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/

I've really enjoyed this game so far.  For those who played MTG or other card games I'm sure you'll enjoy this one too.  I played Magic for a few years awhile back and Hearthstone is the Blizzard version with some different mechanics set in a Warcraft world :D.

As of now there are 9 classes (Warrior, Paladin, Shaman, Mage, Warlock, Rogue, Druid, Priest, Hunter) to choose from.   As expansions roll out, Blizzard will add more sets of cards and maybe classes (they mentioned Death Knight) as well.  The difference in classes is each has their own specific 'hero power' for 2 mana, as well as a set of class-specific cards.  There is a larger pool of neutral cards that can be used in any class' deck.

There are unlimited possibilities in making decks which is cool that you can create your own flavor and compete against others.  One thing that all wc3 players miss is activity, this game is booming with players so you will find games or Arena matches at all times.  There is a nice ladder ranking system that resets season (currently 1 month).

At first the game seemed very simple to me, but as I played more and learned the cards I found that there is a ton of strategy and it is much more complex then I once thought.  There are often a number of ways you can play each turn while trying to outsmart your opponent, baiting the oppositions moves and disguising your own.  It's really a cool game that is fast paced and fun.

Another cool feature is that there is no chat box during games... which leaves all the flaming and caps-locked nerd talk out of the game.  It is a stress-free environment which is a relief.  However, there are emotes like Well Played, Sorry, Thank you, etc.  If you had a nice match with a player you can always add them to your friends list and talk from there.  You can play friendly practice matches on the ladder or against friends.

As Persuade pointed out, you get 10 gold for each win which doesn't seem like much, but you also have random daily quests which is cool.  For example, "Hunter or Mage Domination - Win 5 games with Hunter or Mage" for 60 gold.  Or, "Spell Master - Cast 50 spells for 100 gold".  You can play casually here and there completing your daily quests and accumulate a decent amount of gold to do Arena runs or buy packs.  I would suggest buying some packs of cards when you begin to get you started.  The best deal is to buy 40 packs for $49.99.  The game itself is free, so if you pay $50 bucks you will have a good amount of cards to start with.  This eliminates the slow grind early and lets you build some good decks right away to do the quests/climb the ladder with.

Another cool feature is disenchanting.  Once you have a card, you have it and can use it in any deck you make as much as you would like.  There is a limit of 2 of the same card per deck, so once you have 2 of a card any more of those cards that you get in a pack you can disenchant for dust.  Or even if you have a card you won't use (like an Epic or Legendary you don't want) you can disenchant that for dust.  Dust is then used to craft cards giving you another way to build your collection.

The cards and deck building is a big factor, but how you play the deck and class is just as much which is cool.  You don't have to have all the best cards to do well and build strong decks.

The games only last 5-15 minutes max which is cool and a relief from the hours of FFA that we are used to.  You can hop on and play a couple matches real quick, tinker with your deck and be gone!

The best fan site for Hearthstone is http://www.hearthpwn.com/

Lastly, the newest patch recently went live that fixed those one-turn-kill gimmicky decks and other balance issues.  It was a great patch that addressed and improved the balance in a major way.

It's free to play, it's a very casual game.

Just don't expect to be able to get a high rank without some good cards, which most people have due to months of grinding or spending money.

The route I'd recommend taking is this.

Get all the classes.  Get all classes to level 10.  Play vs the AI in normal and expert mode to learn the basics.  Beat all 9 expert AI.

By now you will have about 300 gold and every basic card.

You can play casual/ranked/arena from here, your choice.

Arena is the easiest way to earn packs/gold without spending money, you need a minimum of 3 wins to basically break even on the cost and 7 wins to be able to continuously play arena without the need to grind gold.

Arena is also the most random gametype, since you can literally draft garbage and the other guy can draft the best stuff.

I bought some, it's a game that I think I'll probably play for a while.  In addition I really don't have time to do all that grinding.  That being said, if you're naturally good at these games (I'm not) you can still advance quickly and pretty far with just the basic cards.
