The Arena! 24 Player FFA - Saturday @ 14 EST / 20 CET Hello, FFA Masters!

We will be hosting a 24 PLAYER FFA this Saturday (Oct 14) @ 14:00 EST / 20:00 CET.

The game name will be = 24 PLAYER FFA #2

It will be hosted on BNet.  You can join from any server.

The map will be "The Arena".  You can download it directly here: https://ufile.io/8y0zr

View map here: https://image.ibb.co/hYGfjU/123.png

The focus in making this map was to avoid having too much gold, and also avoid it from being too big of a map.  I believe these goals were accomplished.  The first play test ended in just over 2 hours and all of the gold on the map was drained.  Since then, I have increased the gold slightly as well as increasing the health of the trees (more lumber per tree) since players were running out of lumber.  I've also added to the middle.

Most 24 Player Maps are simply too large with too much gold.  The layout of this map is similar in a sense to Marketsquare where each player has their own semi-enclosed base with an opening in the front.   The creeps will be familiar as I used creep camps from some of the best maps (Marketsquare, Twilight Ruins, Lost Temple, etc.)

The first play test turned out to be a nice game and it felt surprisingly balanced for the first iteration.  This time around should be even better and there will be a good turnout of FML/FFA players in this game!

Lastly, we picked a time that would interfere with FML games as least as possible.  There should only be 1 FML game running which starts an hour earlier this Saturday.

Come join us and look for the game to be hosted approx. 30 minutes before 14 EST / 20 CET this Saturday, OCT 14.

Game name = 24 PLAYER FFA

Map stats:

24x Starting Spawns (15,000 gold)
24x Natural Expansions (10,500 gold)
16x Contested Expansions (20,000 gold)
10x Goblin Laboratories
10x Goblin Merchants
8x Mercenary Camps (4x Dalaran, 4x Barrens).
4x Marketplaces
2x Health Fountains
2x Mana Fountains
1x Dragon Roost

There are also 10x Waygates around the map, each porting to the opposite side.  These are around a center ring in the map, helping to reduce the effective size.

Hope to see you there!

Re: M17 Result In what world does the human get ignored in FFA against 3 UDs?  Well, he was underestimated and I didn't look for island.   Strangely enough the other players found the island (Reinforcement?) but didn't say anything.   Would of been a closer game if someone pointed that out... or i scouted it.

It was unfortunate I disc in the first game, I had an almost perfect start and spawns were good.   Next game spawns were bad and I lost first big 100 food fight putting me behind in levels.  After watching the replay, Reinforcement took advantage of his opportunity to grab 4 expos, amassing almost 40k gold but somehow lost most of it quickly.  AJ had some questionable decisions to kill his units and could never really recover his economy/macro.  Nice fighting though.  I fought poorly vs AJ but fought better as the game went on.   Not as well as I'd like to play here... losing heroes here and there and not scouting Lil Tic's island.

Side note:  Some of these FML games are still good, but FML games now seem to always be base races, lots of peacing, sitting around.  Even if everyone has mass gold it's usually a base race or something similar in the end.   I think this evolution of FML games loses a lot of the fun for me and some others.   Any advantage you may have in mechanical skill (micro, macro, creeping, army compositions, etc.) is kind of lost in this format because there isn't much of an advantage to playing well early... maybe it even hurts you more often.  I think we yearn for a competitive ladder again because with ladder those mechanical skills are rewarded more appropriately and there isn't multiple "peace and hoard at 50"  times through each game for every player.

I don't want to take anything away from Lil Tic though, he was smart and patient (and friendly) and executed his strategy to win the game.   gg wp

Nice win, Lil Tic.  Thx for rehost.  Congrats on finals!

Re: FML Season 28 | Finals Say what you want about the strength of this final cast, it is a cast that represents what FFA is nowadays.

Final (Game 1)

:Germany: :orc: ena1337
:Russia: :ud: qwest
:Poland: :ne: Gradient
:Russia: :ra: SomethingWicked

Map: Neon City

Ena is trying hard to become friends with the other finalists, and his strategy worked in the couple games he won this season.   In reality, his mechanical skills (macro, army compositions) as well as his decision making and micro with large armies are weak.   Still, I think he will win this game as Neon City is a nice Orc map and his style may not be punished until after he wins a game.   I like Orc on this map with good items, not too much gold, and with the best micro player to face being an Undead.

Final (Game 2)

:Russia: :ud: qwest
:Poland: :ne: Gradient
:Russia: :ra: SomethingWicked
:Czech: :hu: Lil Tic

Map: Mur'Gul Oasis

Great map choice!  Mur'Gul has had some memorable FFA games.  I think it will be tough for Gradient or Lil Tic to win on this map.  SomethingWicked would be my 2nd choice here, but I like Qwest to win in this game using more aggression than normal and taking control of the middle mines and mana fountain.

Final (Game 3)

:Poland: :ne: Gradient
:Russia: :ra: SomethingWicked
:Czech: :hu: Lil Tic
:Germany: :orc: ena1337

Map: Sanctuary LV

Oh god, Sanctuary again!  At least Qwest isn't in this one.   Many gold mines and places to hide makes this a map that I predict Gradi to win.  There are almost Zero good items for the Blademaster here and ena may have a difficult time thinking FFA on this grand of scale.  If not Gradient, I think SomethingWicked will take this one.   SW showed he can win in the late stages of a game and his micro can be an advantage in this game.

Final (Game 4)

:Russia: :ra: SomethingWicked
:Czech: :hu: Lil Tic
:Germany: :orc: ena1337
:Russia: :ud: qwest

Map: Purity 2.0

This map looks really cool.   I see Ena staying 50 food and being super greedy and ending up losing to SomethingWicked or Qwest.  I think this will be the best game of the series since the map is smaller and there will be more action.   I will take Qwest here for his 2nd victory of the series.

Final (Game 5)

:Czech: :hu: Lil Tic
:Germany: :orc: ena1337
:Russia: :ud: qwest
:Poland: :ne: Gradient

Map: Hurricane Isle

With both Ena and Gradient looking for their 2nd win to not give up the crown to Qwest, Lil Tic will win this game as human on a ridiculous map.

Really though, Sanctuary and Hurricane Isle in the FML Finals 4 way??    :icon_rolleyes:

Qwest won't need to win but with two wins locked up already, he will have his incentives.  Elf can win on this map...  Orc can too...  But I forsee a Gradi suicide on Ena once he feels like the orc has gone too far.    Lil Tic will win as the Human should and ultimately Qwest will win the season.    A shoutout to SomethingWicked as I haven't really seen you play and may be underestimated you here.  Remember though, that may be a good thing :)

HOPEFULLY these games are not all super long and boring... but I won't hold my breath.  It will be interesting nonetheless to see how it all plays out.

Patch 1.31 is LIVE! Patch 1.31 has gone live!

“This is our last major patch before Reforged.”

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/warcraft3/t/1-31-0-patch-notes/5721z

Let me start with saying that I love to hear that Reforged is on the horizon.  Patches always come with a lot of negative reaction, but I am pleased with these balance changes, especially pertaining to FFA.

Here are the most significant changes for FFA, as I see them:

Alchemist slightly nerfed across the board.  Healing Spray now has a short cooldown, the first two levels of Acid Bomb reduced damage, and most importantly the gold conversion on Transmute has been reduced to 100% (down from 125%).  While I would’ve preferred an increase in cooldown, the reduction in gold conversion is good too.  Alchemist will still be a great hero, but not quite as OP.

Keeper of the Grove’s Tranquility has been nerfed to make the Keeper invulnerable for 1 second (down from 3 seconds).  This is a great change for FFA as he can now be disabled or targeted much sooner and he still cannot use an AMS pot beforehand.

Pandarian Brewmaster’s Breath of Fire damage increased. Rejoice! Panda has been a staple in FFA since the beginning until the recent nerfs.  I’m really happy that Breath of Fire damage has been increased and he should be seen more often again.

Blademaster’s Critical Strike has been reverted to factor in all damage again, while Windwalk has been reworked. I am also in favor of this change.  BM crits in FFA were insane and will be again, but he will be more vulnerable now.

Undead’s new rod of healing was nerfed from the original PTR version. It’s now more like the Scroll of Regeneration of Human (it’s effect is over time and can be canceled with damage).  It only heals 100 HP though (Human’s heals 225 HP).  This item shouldn’t be very good now and hardly at all in FFA since it’s not a scroll of healing instant effect anymore.

Unholy Frenzy re-work and nerf.  It now costs 175 mana and increases attack speed by 50% (down from 75%), still as AOE (similar to Roar), requiring a unit sacrifice.  This is still going to be a great spell in FFA, but it’s been toned down and in combination with the nerf to healing rod, this is a fair change that should temper the worries of over buffing UD.

Gargs reduced gold cost by 10 and increased movement speed.  I love this change, one I've called for a long time.  Gargs were the most cost inefficient unit (almost 100g per 1 food) outside of Flying Machines, now their cost is more in line with their power.  They toned down the original buff to movement speed from the PTR, so Hippogryphs still have a higher base movement speed. (400 vs 375)

Tauren and Knights were slightly buffed which is good for FFA.  Most armies are air dominant; any buffs to heavy melee will make them more attractive and more so of a consideration to include in army compositions.

Orb of Fire has been reworked and slightly nerfed from the PTR; I believe it will still be effective in FFA but not overpowered.

Pretty much everything else looks good imo, I’m happy with the item changes as well.  I would like to see a couple changes to the map pool (The Crucible w/ Taverns...?), but no complaints here.  We have a lot to be excited for with Reforged and balance in FFA will improve with this patch.  Long Live FFA!

WC3: Reforged Hey guys,

Hope you're still there and excited as I am to play FFA in Reforged.  I haven't played WC in a couple of months and I know it will probably be December until it's released, but you can bet I will be back to play FFA in Reforged and go for #1, stream actively and help promote/build the FFA scene!

Who's with me?

Re: FML Season 30 | Sign up! Really happy to see FML Season 30 incoming.  While I will not be playing, this is great news.  If you guys are short and really need another player I will join.

I want to also say that FFA in Reforged WILL have a bright future!  I will be back full time and the player base will be significant.  It us up to us to stream, promote, post on forums, etc. and I will surely do my part.  WC3 is the best game ever, and FFA is the best game type.  It will be great!

GL HF this season!!

Re: Early FFA History by X[Hunters] Cool write up, man.  Thanks for posting!  Some of us have been around for a long time, but I think only AlienWareOwnZ is still playing of those guys you listed.

I personally started playing FFA right after these times you discussed.  The tail end of players like F-L-Y and Nooblex and into the times of Magadansky, Nline, etc.

Unfortunately, I am relinquished to feeling like WC3 and FFA is like a bad break up full of good memories and lasting disappointment.  We have had a strong community for so many years all leading up to the release of WC3: Reforged which was any WC3 player's dream.  The release couldn't of been worse and it has not gotten any better, FFA has been slowly dying.  WC3 Champions is an incredible 3rd party ladder and program that supports competitive WC3, but less and less so FFA.   We really need Blizzard to release a working ladder for Reforged, but it's been almost a year with no ladder.

Activision-Blizzard is no longer the Blizzard we grew up with.  I hate to say it but all games now are driven by profit-first mentality and microtransactions... games are made now to be addictive with daily quests and ways to get consumers to spend money.  The focus is not on gameplay or graphics or story anymore.  Activision-Blizzard is a prime example of this, as the quality of the great games of the past are gone (Diablo 2, WC3, WOW in its first stages).  Even Hearthstone has turned for the worst.   I truly feel the era of great gaming has come and passed.   /rantover

We were all so hopeful for WC3 Reforged, me perhaps more than anybody.  Maybe one day ladder will be released and the FFA scene revitalized.  We do have the tools to do so (twitch, discord, ffamasters, youtube, etc.).

Re: M31 Result Hey Slythe,

While you may not agree with Eshan's playstyle, you cannot deny his effort and ability to win games against tough opponents.  His strategy can be extreme and is often frustrating to watch and play against, but it is effective nonetheless.  We probably should encourage/promote a different style of play, but I don't think it's right to disparage him so much. In my view, he is the deserved champion in this season, regardless of any personal disdain.
