Re: S24 M48
lol @ObserveAndLearn

aarnik is a good player, at least in custom games, so yeah having him as replacement is a good cal; however, I wonder @FML|red7z7 @FML|WorpeX  what exactly is the criteria to select which player is next to substitute? I mean, arnik and Ena had both the same score and according to the full standing list, Ena was right below Gradient while arni was a bit lower.

Just curious how this tie breaker works.

While I can't say for sure how Arni got the spot over the others as I wasn't part of that discussion, I can say that we don't really use tie-break procedures when the players are already eliminated. We do our best to find the best replacement possible but we also factor in player availability and how quickly we can contact someone to fill in.

Replacements do not include points, he will be playing with this 32.

Re: Patch 1.27b
What can you do with 128 mb limit now? I am not an expert of the world editor. Does it mean you can make much bigger maps/campaigns?

Well the 8mb restriction was just for hosting maps on b.net. You could create maps that were much larger than that, you just couldn't host them.

Essentially it prevented map makers from really taking maps to the next level. You could do a lot in the editor at up to 8mb, but with a restriction at 128mb maps can be on another level completely. Had this been done years ago we would have really seen some AWESOME multiplayer campaigns, fully custom races (with custom models), DoTA without re-used assets from wc3 and way more polish. The sky really is the limit.

Re: Build A World Map Making Contest! Resources:

http://world-editor-tutorials.thehelper.net/cat_usersubmit.php?view=19935
http://classic.battle.net/mod/dev/melee.shtml

Tips:

We recommend the official item drop table for determining what items creeps will drop:
Quote from: Blizzard Creep Item Drop Table
Levels 3-8: Level 1 permanent or power up.
Levels 8-11: Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up.
Levels 11-14: Level 1 permanent or power up and Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up.
Levels 14-17: Level 1 permanent or power up and Level 3 permanent or charge.
Levels 18-21: Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up and Level 4 permanent or charge.
Levels 21-23: Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up and Level 5 permanent or charge.
Levels 23-26: Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up and Level 6 permanent or charge.
Levels 26-29: Level 1 permanent or power up and Level 3 permanent or charge and Level 7 artifact.

- Use a variety of terrain types
- Polish your map with doodads and environmental effects
- Don't have large areas of empty space
- Have pathways large enough for big armies to walk easily
- Don't leave gaps in trees for wisps to hide in
- Ask for help!! Getting your map perfect will take play-time and testing. Feel free to message anyone in the community for help. I am also ready to help anyone at any time, just send me a PM on the site!

FFA Maps:
  • Minimum of 4 start locations fairly spread out from each other and with equal access to the maps resources.
  • At least 1 natural expansion and a secondary expansion for each player is a must.
  • Lots and lots of creeps! 4 players means the camps will get crept fast. Try to include a Red camp in there somewhere as well.
  • Wide pathways. Most battles in FFA are 100 food armies and any sort of land composition can be cumbersome to move on maps with small passages and choke points.
  • Taverns are a requirement for FFA balance purposes. Maps with Observatories and Shops are also very heavily preferred.
  • Keep in mind that FFA matches last an average of 2 hours. Keep resources high for gold and lumber.

Site Downtime :FMLN:

Thank you everyone for your patience during the downtime the last 24 hours. Our webhost detected a virus among the sites files. The infection has been removed and the site was re-scanned to be sure it was clean. It took longer than I had anticipated for this process to happen but we will take actions to be sure it doesn't happen again.

If future issues arrise, please note that updates and communication will always be available on the cbox. Please use the following link to access the cbox independently of the FFAMasters website: http://my.cbox.ws/~6-683747-xkyjzy

Thanks again for your patience!

Re: Build A World Map Making Contest!
Super cool idea, looking forward to the results.

Can you elaborate why landscape is 50 points and balance 30?

In my opinion nothing is more important than balance in a competetive game. I know this issn't a 1v1 map and FFA maps only have to be somewhat balanced for them to be playable, but don't you think balance is the most important thing, after all?

Really good question!

The answer is that the very first category "Map Structure & Layout / 20" actually doubles as a balance category as well. Really, we could have put this one into either heading and it would have worked but decided to put it under landscape instead.

A large part of balance in a FFA map is actually just where the player spawns are located. They need to be an equal distance from each other and also spread out. An example of a map thats poorly balanced for FFA is the blizzard map "Ruins". This map pits all 4 starting locations right in the center of the map - this means any sort of air attack will dominate and races that are strong at aerial hit and runs (Elf) will be very strong on it.

So, TL;DR:  "Map Structure & Layout" will be judged as a Landscape and a Balance category.

Re: Build A World Map Making Contest!
Hi, I am a melee map maker from Hive.
1v1 map is my current field of expertise, but I would like to give FFA a shot.
Would anyone explain me about the rules in making FFA maps?
Below this message are the links of my maps.

Really nice terrain work there! Very impressive job, glad to see you participating! Making FFA maps isn't overly different from 1v1 honestly. FFA players love diverse maps and can adjust to different situations. Hell, we played a game on Hurricane Isles this season! (footnote, almost everyone hates that map)

I'll outline a few core principles to keep in mind, but otherwise its fair game.

Thats pretty much it!

For an example of FFA maps that are very well liked in the community, check out: (8) Twilight Ruins, (6) Silverpine Forest, (4) Deathrose. All 3 are staples for their map size and are played in every FFA Masters season.
