Title: The Future of FFAREPLAYS.COM Discussion
Post by: DarKNeSSCaLLs on December 12, 2011, 08:49:46 pm
First off, if you haven't heard yet, ffareplays.com will be shut down very soon by owner Slack, who has kept it up for many many years, despite being inactive in the gaming scene for the majority of the time.

Here's the thread:

http://www.ffareplays.com/comment.php?file=foo

Now we need to discuss what to do. FFAreplays.com, whether you want to admit it or not, has been the central HUB for FFA activity and drama throughout the years, even though FFA activity levels are not what they used to be, we still are a small community built around this website. Even with the Clan Lone/Fury websites going down, we still made it our home.

Here seems to be the possible choices:

1.) Donate Slack money to keep it alive - So far I don't think he is receptive to the idea. He seems intent on either letting the site expire or handing it off to someone else. Should he be open to it though, I think the best method is use of a Paypal Donation account

2.) Giving the site for someone else to operate - I can think of no one better than Worpex, he has led FML for many years, handled countless spam attacks, and I believe has a good grasp on understanding the concepts of websites and such. If this were to happen, we could use the above method (paypal donation account) to help him support the site

3.) Find a different central HUB for FFA activity - I find this to be a difficult option, but if all else fails, we should prepare for the possiblity. The only other active FFA site is this one right here, can it be made into an FFA replays portal of some kind? And how much work would be involved in it?

Advice/Suggestions from fellow website specialists would be welcome, because to tell you the truth, I have 0 knowledge on the subect of it.

Let me guess. His name was Nebu. Again.

lol, no. Not only would have Nebu finished it but it would have been on an external site, would steal passwords and would be in technicolor.

If Worpex is willing I think that's the most likely option.  I don't know how much it would cost to run per a month so that's probably the most important bit of information.  Worp could add a donation meter (measuring how much has been donated and how much is needed for the month) to the top of this site as well as ffareplays if he does take it over.   Could also add some type of incentives for those who donate though I don't know if the usual ones would work (those being bigger inbox, an icon saying you donated, etc.)

Just my thoughts.

i have another idea:

i have been looking at the replays section of http://www.wcreplays.com/ (http://www.wcreplays.com/)
it seems they have different subheadings there:
- staff replays
- recommended replays
- member replays
- all replays
and they are  further divided into: ESS, REC, RTS, WNL (at the moment its still in beta)

since they are still working on it, maybe we could ask an admin there if its possible to add an 'ffa replays' section as well (tell them that our usual site is going down), so we could post replays there, it will also popularize ffa into a bigger warcraft community

I would like to know how much it will need a month to run ffareplays, because i have no idea about it, yet. I think there would be some guys giving donations (me included). Just need some information like who will run the page and how much it will take to maintain. If the page dies, our community will lose his legs.

They used to have an FFA section but it got removed, I doubt they would bring it back.

wcreplays admins are pretty anal and get insulted at the slightest thing and will ban you for whatever reason, so I doubt it would work out anyways

To be fair, WCReplays also has to deal with some of the most retarded people I've ever seen.  If the replays did get moved there then there would just be countless trolls posting about the games as well which might get annoying.

The most simple solution would be if we create a new Demonreps Account (eg. demonreps.com/FFAreplays/). and share it with all who are interested in it.

http://www.demonreps.com/ffareps/

if you are interested in it..

Login: FFAreplays
pw: fmlpwns

ill add some fml reps on it then

at first we might should focus on keeping ffareplays running with either to support slack with donations or worpex take the control of the site over, when he is up for that.

Agreed, Slack recently said he might be open to donations, hopefully we'll have more info soon

for a .com address, its 10$/year
for a host, it's usually a pay for what you get, you can have something pretty good for 4$/month; but would need to ask slack for the exact numbers

Well, based off of what was said on FFAReplays, I think Hydro deserves a hearty thank you.  Also I know that I, and probably many others, are willing to chip in a bit to help pay you back Hydro.  If you want to post pm your Paypal account I'll send you a bit of money.  Thanks again.
