News / Team Battle Royale 6 | Go!
« Last post by FML|HighTac on August 04, 2022, 10:00:32 am »
Hi everyone,

I got convinced to organize another Team Battle Royale, before going on a parental hiatus. Historically, TBR always required a lot more admin work, compared to FML seasons. For that reason and because the general hosting environment changed since 2020, a few compromises will be necessary, especially when it comes to anon, modes and maps. You find further details below and some parts will have to be worked out in the next few weeks.

What is TBR? It's a team event, where all participating players are being drafted into their teams by four team captains. Throughout the month of September, teams seat their players for the FFA games scheduled.

When: Aug 28 - Sep 30, 2022

Please sign up by posting your name and if you would be willing to be a team captain into this thread. Feel free to add some details about your motivation and availability throughout September! Only known community members that proved to be reliable and know FFA basics will be permitted.

Remarks:

  • We may not be able to host via W3C due to visible ping in lobby and the map pool
  • I will try to reactivate our Bnet shared accounts. However, if they still require every single player to be authentificated via email code, we may not use them
  • Finding subs is a huge pain in TBR. Therefore, we will reject players that missed a lot of matches in the past and reserve the right to cancel matches instead of finding subs.
  • It's always a bit tricky to create the map pool for TBR and ensure that the correct map files are being hosted. This is even more of an issue since we got zoom triggers. Therefore, we may stick to "regular" maps for the most parts

Cheers,
HighTac

News / FML Season 33 | The Winner is...
« Last post by FML|HighTac on July 10, 2022, 07:25:11 am »

Congratulations to @qwest for finally winning a long-deserved FML trophy. With four wins in five matches, he's the first (full-time) undead player that takes the title since Tyrant did in 2015. His macro and tactical genious seemed unmatched this season and the final map pick proved to be clever.

Thanks to all the participants and the admin team. After my hiatus, I really enjoyed to see some high-level FFA again and I was positively surprised by the absence of drama. Using Discord for orga and scheduling may have led to a bit more confusion every now and then, but it cut the effort for admins in half, in my opinion. Definitely something we'll do again.

A bit prematurely, I stated some weeks ago that I'd be willing to run a Team Battle Royale this summer. With us approaching the middle of July, I'm not so sure anymore. While I enjoy many things about TBR, it's also way more challenging from an admin perspective. Furthermore, we got some additional hurdles (not all map files with zoom trigger, Blizzard deactivated shared accounts, etc. etc.). As I'm not the only admin, I don't want to rule it out entirely, but my real life obligations prevent me from playing a key role in it. Another FML Season that starts in Q3 seems more realistic.

Last but not least, I don't want to leave unmentioned how much worse the FML Discord Chat has become in my eyes. I stated before that I don't enjoy it and I'm not willing to moderate it anymore. Still, in order for FML to be somewhat welcoming to fun people and new players, I kindly ask you to scale back sexism and toxicity.

Cheers,
HighTac

General Discussion / Re: Got a few questions

Plush! good to see an orc legend return.

Just download the Battle Net client to get to play. And then download the W3Champions client which is how the community plays ladder nowadays: https://www.w3champions.com/

Should only take a couple minutes

The community is alive and well, and FFA is thriving. The ladder is active, and the RT and solo ladders are extremely active. FML seasons are also running, with a new event starting sometime later this summer.

The games are actually quite good on ladder, the skill level has increased, and most of the maps are on the smaller side. I would say the average game length is about an hour now on ladder.

General Discussion / Got a few questions

It's so cool FML is still going.  :icon_biggrin: I started watching YouTube videos on Back2Warcraft and, man, I really miss this game. So, out of curiosity (and not promising anything!), I have some questions:

How do you play online? Read something about Reforged screwing everything up but not sure what info is currently accurate.

Is there still an active ladder or custom game scene for FFA? (Or even 4v4 RT to practice macro openings/fights?)

If there is still an active FFA scene outside of the leagues/tourneys, what are games usually like? I've got an itch to play but not if it's 2.5+ hours per game. (Especially if those games consist of camping bases, building on islands, and hearing "omg lost all" every time a hero dies.)

Round 2 Predictions

Match 10

Seksi
Leluaami
Joey
Iluminate

All these players are very good, should be a fun match with lots of high level micro, and high level HIDING. Leluaami is still the best here, but all have a good chance.

Match 11
Rody
Godfather
Rulaz
supremo

Godfather or Rulaz win here, the other 2 are tomes. Rulaz has a good chance unless Godfather rushes him.

Match 12
Gradi
Airen
Sheik
Vox

Sheik heavy favorite here, but airen and gradi could team him out. In that case Airen has shown some good skill lately, he is my 2nd choice

Match 13
Geass
noexxx
Tox
DeniskaEE

Great game with strong microers, should be the least chatty/manip game here. Geass looked rusty and Noexxx looked pro, so I will go with the humangod

Match 14
Qwest
Aaarni
Fetta
Soso

Qwest unstoppable at this point. Fetta is a tome, soso is rusty, and aarni cant pull a miracle twice.

Match 15
Lawliet
Joggel
Red
Xipotec

Ez win for Lawliet unless Joggel can sneak attack him while he fights another

Match 16
Slythe
Neutron
Dennis
Trunkz

Trunkz seems a bit afk, so should be a win for Neutron unless they team him hard. If Trunkz plays it could be quite interesting

Match 17
Jaod
Toxi
Breezey
Stein

Stein might actually win this one, since the others are not familiar with his tactics. Toxi looks strong but doesnt fully have FFA in his grasp yet. Jaod played well but makes a lot of mistakes. If Stein gets rushed, then Toxi can win. If not, the others must self reflect more. SALUDOS

Match 1
Rulaz
Noexxx
Illuminate
Slythe

This is a great map for a tough match. Noexxx is the human god Thor. His Panda-centered style is great for macro, and he makes great decisions. Rulaz is a strong opponent who has shown good matches on this map before. His Alch-based gameplay is powerful, and he is a good thinker. He won't be able to bully Noexxx, and he might get manipped by the very cunning Iluminate. Iluminate is a tricky player with strong micro that knows how to create ideal conditions for himself by hoarding gold. He has good FFA sense and knows how to end the game. If Noexxx gets overteamed, Iluminate wins here. Slythe is a dark-horse candidate. If he gets rushed, he is out. If he is ignored, he could change the game, but I don't see him winning this after being AFK for a long time.

Match 2
GLHF

Match 3
Sheik
Joey
Voxius
Rody32

Sheik is a heavy favorite to win the FML title this season, and this game should be relatively easy for him. JoeyBadass used to be a top ffa player, but he is very rusty and I dont think he can go toe-to-toe with Sheik. Voxius has shown some good rushing skills, but it will be hard for him vs Sheik or even Joey. I dont know much about Rody but I can guess he is the weakest player here. Sheik gets an easy win unless the others can team him properly.

Match 4
Fetta
Geass
Lawliet
Gradient

This is a very interesting cast. We haven't seen Fetta in a long time, he will probably die 1st unless he has position luck. Geass is a former champ, and a strong HU player. I think of him like a Blastoise, a tough nut to crack. Lawliet is a solo pro playing his first FML game. And Gradi needs no introduction, the game massing, moonwell massing, robot from Poland who plays a macro-heavy style that focuses on destroying your buildings and your economy. If LawLiet rushes Gradi out, he can win. If Lawliet rushes Fetta, I see Geass winning. If Lawliet rushes Geass, I see Gradi winning. In no scenario do I see Fetta winning  :icon_rolleyes:

Match 5
Wiz
Neytpoh
Supremo
Aarnikratti

Oh god Supremo. Can't even talk about him. Wiz is a strong opponent but with low FFA experience. Aarni is a weak opponent with high FFA experience. Neutron is the FULL METAL JACKET. There would have to be some serious teaming for him to lose on such a small map.

Match 6
Trunkz
Lil Tic
Tox
Xipotec

Tox is unpredictable, and Xipotec is the weakest here. Trunkz is a runaway train that can only be stopped by teaming and base-racing. Lil Tic is a master of deception who knows how to win games and avoid teaming. If Tox gets manipped by Tic's classic tactics of hiding gold, using invis units, and teaming, then Trunkz can lose. Otherwise, its Trunkzs game.

Match 7
Airenikus
Joggel
Godfather
Dennis

This is an even match with 4 players of somewhat similar power levels. Airen has a LOT of experience, and knows how to win games that don't include Qwest. Joggel is a powerhouse who can annihilate his opponents, but he never downloaded the manip package. Godfather is a prickly individual who can show some great games, and some great flames. Dennis is a relatively newer FFAer who has strong micro but has not yet learned his late-game decision making. Joggel is the favorite in a standard match on this small map, but if it gets messy, I'm going with Don Corleone.

Match 8
Leluaami
Toxi
Reinforcement
Red

An interesting matchup on a medium sized map. Leluaami is another favorite to win the season, but he will face some fierce resistance with the micro from Toxi and the intelligence of Cement-. Red is outclassed here, but if he can do Necrowagon push and then carve out space for himself, he has a chance to make it to late game. Lelu is still the favorite, because his game sense, his manips, and his tree hiding will confuse Toxi into killing the others. Watch out for that island!

Match 9
Qwest
Jaod
Seksi
zTsoso

Maybe the most stacked match of this round. Seksi and Soso are semi-retired and rusty, but they are still smart strong opponents on a large map like this. Jaod is also a good FFA player, especially with UD, but Qwest is the dark lord of Undead, the Voldemort of FFA. He will dominate this game in obvious, and also in subtle ways. I predict he will always have the most gold, and be impossible to eliminate, killing everyone with 100 army and 1 necropolis that can never be found. If Seksi and Soso use a strong mental approach to Qwest, then they have a chance. But none of them can 1v1 him, and they don't know that yet.
