Re: Build A World Map Making Contest!
Anyone know how to get the doodad rocks/glaciers to touch or overlap? There seems to be a restriction preventing them from getting too close but on some maps I see them overlap.

Hold Shift while placing them.  :icon_wink:

If you dont know about theese:
Ctrl + Page Up/Page Down = Rising/Lowering of the object
Ctrl + Left Mouse = Rotation of the obejct
 Shift + Right Mouse = Zoom in/Out
Ctrl + Right Mouse = Camera rotation

Re: Build A World Map Making Contest! I heard players hate snow maps in normal melee. Does it also apply here at FFA? Or am I allowed to make a map based on Icecrown?

Re: Build A World Map Making Contest! Its not that we need a specific 4- , 6- , 8- or whatever player map. What FML in general needs is a really balanced map between multiple playstyles that will live for many seasons. I will give examples:

Market Square and Twilight Ruins are probably the most played on maps. Both of them have just the right amount of creeps to earn good items, level your heroes, acquire goldmines etc. But what they also have, and that is crucial, is the possibility to play the map differently, according to one's style.

Both on Market and on Twilight there is the possibility to spawn very close to an opponent. This gives the option to rush (bear in mind that "rush" in FFA usually means fast 80 food push) while still not falling behind. Of course, other players tend to play it peaceful and creep and/or hoard and try to avoid fighting as long as possible. Both of these maps allow both kinds of play and that makes them the best for FFA. The closest to them are probably Silverpine and Deathrose but they have too strong item stacking possibilities which make them very very slightly subpar in my opinion.

Other maps that were listed here lack certain qualities, listed above. For instance, Emerald Shores is a very aggressive map. Harvest of Sorrow is a long drawn map and games are usually very long because of its layout. Not to say that they are bad but what makes them slightly inferiour to Market and Twilight is that rushing on Harvest is super hard without falling far behind while playing peaceful will get you killed on Emerald. There is no adaptation when going into the match (except if you know that a player will play the same style no matter what) on certain maps, because of their structure. There are many other examples of maps that lack something: Gold Rush has too many gold mines which again prohibits rushing; Deadlock has too little creeps; Savage Storm has too little goldmines, hard creeps and islands; Monsoon has wood problems, imbalanced creeping and spawning patterns etc. etc.

So what I would recommend is that you find a good balance between spawning locations (I would say its better to be more than 4 so that it gives this random effect on the course of the game like Twilight or Market but that is up to you), creeps that wont leave your heroes at lvl 3 2 1 or lvl 5 5 5, a balanced number of goldmines (yes, its fun to have an uneven number but it creates either towering contest or heavy teaming, so to have a perfect FFA map I'd say leave this option out) and items that would not change the course of a game (e.g. not have a single huge red camp that drops two tome of powers etc.).

With all that being said, I still like refreshment in the scene so any new ideas are welcome. The text above was just a description of what the perfect FFA map would be. However, there is a reason we do play other maps as well, even if they are imbalanced or favour certain playstyles. So you can produce something out of the ordinary and still qualify for a good map for FML! :)

Re: Build A World Map Making Contest!
Opened them both up quick just to look at them. I gotta say, the terrain is impressive on Normandy! Really great job on that. Wish that Fjord was given the same attention as that map as the layout seems great, especially for a 12 player map.

Were these on the FFA bot previously?

No. These maps has never been on FFA-bot. I just played and tasted it(Normandy) one time with Happy and (Fjord) with Airenikus 3-4 days ago.
