Season 24 is still only mid-way through, but its time to start looking ahead to Season 25! For the upcoming season we want to see the community get in on the fun and start building new and exciting worlds for us to visit! In addition to the landscapes we've all grown to love, we hope to also journey to new lands and battle across Azeroth in places we've never seen before!

For this contest, we will be asking members to open the World Editor and create a new battleground!
Each battleground will be judged by a Tribunal based on a 100 point scale. The following people will be judges for this event:

:USA: WorpeX
:Germany: PinballMap
:Bulgaria: Magadansky

The judging criteria is as follows:

 - Use of Doodad and Terrain Palette  / 20

FFA Balance (total 30)
-Every good maps needs proper placement of creeps which are easy enough to defeat yet challenging enough to be fun. Proper start distance to trees, mines, creeps are considered as well as gold counts and racial advantages/disadvantages.
 - Items & Creeps / 20
 - Other / 10

Tips:

We recommend the official item drop table for determining what items creeps will drop:
Quote from: Blizzard Creep Item Drop Table
Levels 3-8: Level 1 permanent or power up.
Levels 8-11: Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up.
Levels 11-14: Level 1 permanent or power up and Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up.
Levels 14-17: Level 1 permanent or power up and Level 3 permanent or charge.
Levels 18-21: Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up and Level 4 permanent or charge.
Levels 21-23: Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up and Level 5 permanent or charge.
Levels 23-26: Level 2 permanent, charge, or power up and Level 6 permanent or charge.
Levels 26-29: Level 1 permanent or power up and Level 3 permanent or charge and Level 7 artifact.

- Use a variety of terrain types
- Polish your map with doodads and environmental effects
- Don't have large areas of empty space
- Have pathways large enough for big armies to walk easily
- Don't leave gaps in trees for wisps to hide in
- Ask for help!! Getting your map perfect will take play-time and testing. Feel free to message anyone in the community for help. I am also ready to help anyone at any time, just send me a PM on the site!

Super cool idea, looking forward to the results.

Can you elaborate why landscape is 50 points and balance 30?

In my opinion nothing is more important than balance in a competetive game. I know this issn't a 1v1 map and FFA maps only have to be somewhat balanced for them to be playable, but don't you think balance is the most important thing, after all?

Really good question!

The answer is that the very first category "Map Structure & Layout / 20" actually doubles as a balance category as well. Really, we could have put this one into either heading and it would have worked but decided to put it under landscape instead.

A large part of balance in a FFA map is actually just where the player spawns are located. They need to be an equal distance from each other and also spread out. An example of a map thats poorly balanced for FFA is the blizzard map "Ruins". This map pits all 4 starting locations right in the center of the map - this means any sort of air attack will dominate and races that are strong at aerial hit and runs (Elf) will be very strong on it.

So, TL;DR:  "Map Structure & Layout" will be judged as a Landscape and a Balance category.

Good luck to all the participants! Hive sends its regards.

I do have a couple of questions though:
1. Are we forced to use that creep drop table or is it just a guideline?
2. Are we allowed to use custom imports (for terraining purposes) as long as the map is still classified as melee?
3. Are fortress (team based) maps allowed?
4. Are we allowed to upload the maps we make for this contest to other sites (for example to the hiveworkshop)?

1. Just a guideline! That guideline is straight from blizzard though. We have a few maps in our rotation that have some camps that deviate from it though (Harvest of Sorrow the biggest one).
2. Yes!
3. No, only FFA maps please. If you need any help with what makes a good FFA map, feel free to ask myself or really anyone here. I can write up a quick blurb in the second post as well if that would help.
4. Yes! Please do!

Thanks for your interest! Looking forward to see your maps.

Also, how do you add this type of water on the terrain? It's not shallow water it seems to be like a very slightly shallow water maybe? I don't see a property in terrain where I can just select water to make it look like a river.

@ZsSuperCumulo
The statue was either from Cityscape/Structures or Cityscape/Props categories.
The runes are from Dalaran Ruins Props or Destructibles, I'm not sure. You can always copy the doodads from other maps if you can not find them, although it will be a bit more time-consuming.
About your other question, that's called rolling shores and there are a couple of ways to do it:
1. Add shallow water, then make all the cliffs into ramps. This will however limit visibility and is time-consuming.
2. Start your map with shallow water everywhere, then raise the terrain out of the water. Now when you lower it, there will be water without cliffs. This does require you to start your map all over again though (you can still copy parts of the terrain/doodads)
I'd recommend that you read my terraining tutorial (http://www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/advanced-terraining-tutorial.203428/#post2003520) for future reference. Not all points in it can be applied to melee map making though.
Good luck!

I see. A suggestion of mine... make a final with the top 3 maps and create an inhouse game with some good players from FFA to represent the map. This way its more of a contest for the follower!

Hey guys, one question, is there a way to get a nice transition for the walls?
I wonder if I can fix the areas indicated by the orange arrows in the squared rectangle, I'd like the vertical, diagonal and horizontal walls to look as smooth as the long diagonal in the circled area, is that possible?

Really nice terrain work there! Very impressive job, glad to see you participating! Making FFA maps isn't overly different from 1v1 honestly. FFA players love diverse maps and can adjust to different situations. Hell, we played a game on Hurricane Isles this season! (footnote, almost everyone hates that map)

I'll outline a few core principles to keep in mind, but otherwise its fair game.

FFA Maps:

Thats pretty much it!

For an example of FFA maps that are very well liked in the community, check out: (8) Twilight Ruins, (6) Silverpine Forest, (4) Deathrose. All 3 are staples for their map size and are played in every FFA Masters season.

I think one important thing that should be mentioned is that we like to avoid islands or cliffs that are unreachable from ground, as they can be towered up and impossible to attack leading to very long games.

FFA players love diverse maps and can adjust to different situations. Hell, we played a game on Hurricane Isles this season! (footnote, almost everyone hates that map)

I'll outline a few core principles to keep in mind, but otherwise its fair game.

FFA Maps:
  • Minimum of 4 start locations fairly spread out from each other and with equal access to the maps resources.
  • At least 1 natural expansion and a secondary expansion for each player is a must.
  • Lots and lots of creeps! 4 players means the camps will get crept fast. Try to include a Red camp in there somewhere as well.
  • Wide pathways. Most battles in FFA are 100 food armies and any sort of land composition can be cumbersome to move on maps with small passages and choke points.
  • Taverns are a requirement for FFA balance purposes. Maps with Observatories and Shops are also very heavily preferred.
  • Keep in mind that FFA matches last an average of 2 hours. Keep resources high for gold and lumber.

Thats pretty much it!

For an example of FFA maps that are very well liked in the community, check out: (8) Twilight Ruins, (6) Silverpine Forest, (4) Deathrose. All 3 are staples for their map size and are played in every FFA Masters season.
Haha thank you for your kind words! Your tips are very very useful. They are perfect guidelines for people who enter the world of FFA map making. I will make try them! Ah, is 16000 gold enough for a main gold mine and 14000 for an expo? Thank you!

Don't worry. Diamond of summoning is not droppable. If you want to disable an item, you manually add items that you want and adjust the percentage. For example, if you only want to drop claw of attack+6 and nobility circlet, then you add those two items manually and give 50percentage for each.

Don't worry. Diamond of summoning is not droppable. If you want to disable an item, you manually add items that you want and adjust the percentage. For example, if you only want to drop claw of attack+6 and nobility circlet, then you add those two items manually and give 50percentage for each.

thank you for replying blast, For example let's say I want four "charged items" to be dropped from a creep: book of necro, health stone, mana stone, and wand of the wind. If I go to specific and select level 4 --> charged --> it shows me those four but also the red drake dragon, golmen, and two more, these last four I don't want, so what I should do is create four new sets of items, each set with 25% of getting the 4 items I want? I no longer use random for this?

If you just use the default item sets it'll just drop the normal items you find in melee maps. If you look at the full list of items there are some random stuff dispersed throughout (like the diamond of summoning) but they aren't part of the default item sets so they don't drop.

Yes, that's exactly how it goes. Random items are for when you do not want any exclusion.

You can get into objective editor and change its RGB but that way your map will no longer be marked as melee

By the way guys, do all creeps of same levels give the same amount of experience?
For example, Sea Elemental lvl 5 and Sea Giant Hunter lvl 5, they both give the same amount of experience to heroes when killed?

Also, is it ok if I give items ranked lvl 4 to creeps ranked lvl 7? that way there arent many imbalanced items across the map.

Yes all creeps of same level give same experience - you can lookup how experience works on blizzards wc3 guide with google search.

Also, sure, put whatever items on whatever creeps you want, ultimately I think the map will be judged on overall balance, not that you followed some strict guideline. I think for Fountain of Manip I put a weaker item drop on the level 10 dragon in the middle

yeah makes sense since some of the items are ridiculously broken for lvl 7 creeps. I think that even unholy aura is given my some lvl 5 creeps which is LOL.

Actually there is a way, but it takes some time and effort.
You might also need some tools like WC3 Image extractor and an image editing program.
1. Find the texture, which your model uses. You can do that by finding the model in Magos Model Editor (via the MPQ browser), going to windows->textures and seeing the texture path.
2. Open up WC3 image extractor and find the texture by the path you saw. Export as .tga
3. Open the .tga in any image editing program (like GIMP, paint.net or photoshop) and select the part of the texture corresponding to your model (the texture might be compilation for a number of doodads).
4. Adjust hue/saturation until you recieve the desired result.
5. Load your modified .tga back into WC3 Image extractor and export it as .blp. 75 quality is optimal (and with the new map filesize limit it shouldn't be a problem).
6. Import your new .blp file into the import manager of your map and change its path to the path from step 1.
7. Save your map and rerun the WE.

I know, too complicated for something so small and it probably isn't worth it, but you could get some very interesting results if you play around with this. I've used it in a couple of maps I've made, you can see the results in the images I've attached. For the rocks and bushes I've used copy-and-paste from other textures though.

@ZsSuperCumulo Well, I just slapped ashenvale rock and grass textures to the outland floating rock. Told you, some really cool stuff can come out of texture fiddling.
And about the tiles, I mostly do everything with a 1px brush unless I need to cover a large area with one tile (after which I add more with the 1px brush).

Also here is a completely random screenshot from one of my WiP 12-man FFA maps (I won't be using it in the contest since it was started beforehand)

@ZsSuperCumulo You can add any weather effects (like snow, rain, moonlight etc) from Scenario -> Map options. Do experiment with it, it can breathe a lot of life into a map. Also experiment with fog too, but don't make it too dense or hard to see through.

@Ugrilainen The limit is now 128MB, no?

@FML|WorpeX Will do, but the map is far from getting finished. Even though it is barely 50% finished, I'm already over the doodad limit :D Just 12-player map things. It's essentially a much larger version of my 3-player Hidden Glade map (http://www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/hidden-glade.208596/).

Handmake melee maps normally never exceed 8MB unless you would add lots of own stuff. Also since w3a is only at 1.26 the limit there should still be the old one.

This is very important to keep in mind!

The limit is a B.net hosting change. It has nothing to do with creating maps, just hosting them. Prior to the new patch you were not allowed to host a map greater than 8mb. Now you can up to 128mb.

Well, there wont be penalty points but you certainly wont score as well. :P Best example is to look outside for inspiration. The world isn't flat unless you're in a city. Making a city map that is flat would be fine, but grassy landscapes and forests always have rolling hills and valleys.

Is your map a melee map? If its not a melee map it will default to some weird ass version, idk why the editor does that. Hit Scenario -> Map Options and look for "Game Data Set". Make sure its set to "Melee Latest Patch".

@ZsSuperCumulo the blue coloring shows that the creeps in question have their acquisition range set to camp (200). Such helper functions (such as the selection helpers and starting location display) can be toggled on or off using the "I" key.

if you want to make the group of creeps a "creep camp" then you select them and double click, change acquisition range to 300 (the range in which they attack things that get near them) blue camps can be AOW creeped for example.

If anyone is looking for a theme i always wanted to see a dungeon based warcraft 3 map.

If anyone remember the old 1 vs 1 map bright and dark... then a bit like this map, just only the dark part :)

Were talking a map with warlocks, overlords, Voidwalkers, infernals, fel stalkers and the list goes on.

And ofcourse a sick ass terrain that remains enjoyable for a player, but still is remarkable and exclusive for a spectator! Lets go!

That stigma does exist, but I don't think its a tileset problem. More of an issue with a lack of good snow maps. Savage Storm is the only Icecrown map we play on and its a love it or hate it type map. The creeps on the tileset are really tough, I would recommend using ones from Lordearon Winter if you do an Icecrown map.

Thank you for your explanation and suggestion. Yea, I found creeps at Icecrown to have extra Hps. As far as I remember lv6 polar bear has 1200hp, which is really really tough.

And I have 2 extra questions. Does basic melee rules apply in FFA? And if so, how important are they? Are they compulsory or just recommended? I downloaded a 4 player map at Map Downloads and I found  the distance between bases to be extreme long, 39~40sec, which is +10sec than normal melee.

My second question is how many player map FML is lacking the most? 4 player map would be easier to work on, but I would like to create something this community is lacking. That way both FML and players will be more satisfied. I can barely see 8 and 10player map. How high is the use frequency of such large scale maps?

Good questions! In solo they like the bases as close as physically possible. They wanted really short games so echo isles clones became rampant and the Twisted Meadows type maps went away. I personally don't feel that that was the way the game was meant to be played, its just how the game evolved over time.

In FFA, we like the old starcraft "no rush 20" type of play. No hero harassment or tower rushes in our games. We play with big ass armies and stacked heroes. This generally means that bases farther apart is the norm.

---

Second question: We've been playing this game a long time. There really isn't any right or wrong type of map cause just having something fresh is going to be great.

If I was going to say one type of map that we have a lack of, it would be the "Deathrose" type map. A 4 player map that is large enough to support FFA games. Deathrose is very unique in that regard. We modified Emerald Shores to fill as an alternative to it, but theres not much else.

Blizzard actually made good 8 player maps. While I would definitely agree that we don't have a lot, the ones that we do have are very highly regarded in the community. Twlight Ruins, Deadlock, Market Square are all classics. Sanctuary, Battleground and a few others are also pretty solid.

We don't really play 10 player maps in the league. It might have something to do with there not being any to use though. Blizzard only made two and they are both garbage.

Divide and Conquer is the only good 12 player map that blizzard made. We usually use the custom map Splatter as an alternative to it. That said, we only use 12 player maps in special events.
Title: Re: Build A World Map Making Contest!
Post by: blast870 on December 26, 2016, 01:15:51 pm
Curiosity still remains. I've checked other maps, and they tend to have short distances like 28sec, which is very norm. Also the highly regarded maps you mentioned, Silverpine Forest had 28sec of distance while Twilight Ruins had 20 and 26 sec. So the latter maps theoretically allows hero harassment and tower rushes. The source of my curiosity is simple; why there exists such a gap between maps. For a FFA layperson, that irregularity is confusing and I do not know which to focus.

-------------

As for the second question, so the map truly in demand is a 4 player map with large space?
I was thinking of making a 8 player map due to its lacking numbers but if solid maps do already exist hmm
Maybe i should move onto 6 or 4 haha
Title: Re: Build A World Map Making Contest!
Post by: FML|red7z7 on December 26, 2016, 02:20:24 pm
My opinion on what is missing from FFA is balanced 6-player maps with lots of creeps, yet small spawn distances. The only 6-player maps we play regularly are Silverpine Forest (very good) and Monsoon (stable, but less popular) and Harvest of Sorrow (somewhat of a classic in FML). Neither Silverpine nor Monsoon has a lot of creep camps per player. Harvest, while it has a lot of creeps, is a humongous map with large spawning distances. On occaison we will play Thunder Lake and Savage Storm. They both are way less popular for multiple reasons. Thunder Lake has really long distances across map because you can't walk the center. It also has really hard to attack mains due to uphill and small pathways. Savage storm has too hard of creeps overall especially for some races. FFA palyers like to be able to fast expand relatively easily and Savage Storm doesn't have that. It also has islands/unreachable cliffs which can lead to camping and long boring games.

Post by: Magadansky on December 27, 2016, 03:04:50 am
Its not that we need a specific 4- , 6- , 8- or whatever player map. What FML in general needs is a really balanced map between multiple playstyles that will live for many seasons. I will give examples:

Market Square and Twilight Ruins are probably the most played on maps. Both of them have just the right amount of creeps to earn good items, level your heroes, acquire goldmines etc. But what they also have, and that is crucial, is the possibility to play the map differently, according to one's style.

Both on Market and on Twilight there is the possibility to spawn very close to an opponent. This gives the option to rush (bear in mind that "rush" in FFA usually means fast 80 food push) while still not falling behind. Of course, other players tend to play it peaceful and creep and/or hoard and try to avoid fighting as long as possible. Both of these maps allow both kinds of play and that makes them the best for FFA. The closest to them are probably Silverpine and Deathrose but they have too strong item stacking possibilities which make them very very slightly subpar in my opinion.

Other maps that were listed here lack certain qualities, listed above. For instance, Emerald Shores is a very aggressive map. Harvest of Sorrow is a long drawn map and games are usually very long because of its layout. Not to say that they are bad but what makes them slightly inferiour to Market and Twilight is that rushing on Harvest is super hard without falling far behind while playing peaceful will get you killed on Emerald. There is no adaptation when going into the match (except if you know that a player will play the same style no matter what) on certain maps, because of their structure. There are many other examples of maps that lack something: Gold Rush has too many gold mines which again prohibits rushing; Deadlock has too little creeps; Savage Storm has too little goldmines, hard creeps and islands; Monsoon has wood problems, imbalanced creeping and spawning patterns etc. etc.

So what I would recommend is that you find a good balance between spawning locations (I would say its better to be more than 4 so that it gives this random effect on the course of the game like Twilight or Market but that is up to you), creeps that wont leave your heroes at lvl 3 2 1 or lvl 5 5 5, a balanced number of goldmines (yes, its fun to have an uneven number but it creates either towering contest or heavy teaming, so to have a perfect FFA map I'd say leave this option out) and items that would not change the course of a game (e.g. not have a single huge red camp that drops two tome of powers etc.).

With all that being said, I still like refreshment in the scene so any new ideas are welcome. The text above was just a description of what the perfect FFA map would be. However, there is a reason we do play other maps as well, even if they are imbalanced or favour certain playstyles. So you can produce something out of the ordinary and still qualify for a good map for FML! :)

One of the requirements is that the maps are melee maps, so if you make them a non-random heroes version I think they can be considered in the contest

Opened them both up quick just to look at them. I gotta say, the terrain is impressive on Normandy! Really great job on that. Wish that Fjord was given the same attention as that map as the layout seems great, especially for a 12 player map.

Were these on the FFA bot previously?

Hello,

Is there anyone, who would be so kind and tested my map w/ some friends?
I have tested it many times, but me and my friend aren't that great melee players and since this community is on semi-pro level (at least I believe in it) it would be very helpful, if I could get some more professional feedback.

If you would be so kind, just write me, I can send you unprotected version of my map. Thank you in advance.

So, regarding the creep camps in dark blue and their natural color. Why is it that every starting position and all of the goldmines (not just starting spawns) have creeps in their natural color (not as creep camps set to 200), but the market place, fountain, other orange and green camps are set to 200 range as dark blue camp?

Will there be a problem if I make a creep camp dark blue for a starting position in a 8 way map?

The vision range on the "natural color" camps is much larger compared to the ones in dark blue. The reason you want the range larger for gold mines is so that players can't build at or next to the camp without it being crept first. You want dark blue for non-gold mine camps so that when you walk passed it without creeping intentions, they don't get aggro'd.

So yes, it would be a problem if you have gold mine camps set to dark blue. Its very abusable.

Hey guys I have a question regarding the items dropped on death.

I have chosen item table from the map and then selected the items according to what I think is balanced, I have also chosen it to be random, for instance:

Murgul Murauder --> Item table --> Item set 1 --> New item --> Random --> Level 2 --> Power up.

This should give me a tome of xp or any of the +2. But When I play my map, it gives me ring of protection +2 and other items.

Also, for other creeps I selected a different item, let's say a level 4 item, but when I kill it I get a level 6 item.

What am I doing wrong here?
Do I have to use Custom item table rather than table from map?

There will be a new option for contest map makers to have their map tested on the FFA Ladder Pool. Please make sure your map is tested before getting it added to the rotation as well.

To get your map added to the pool, please do the following:

There will only be 4 slots at a time on the ladder for testing. Maps will be removed without warning by the ladder moderators (DV and Ugrilainen). We will do our best to allow maps to have sufficient testing before they are removed. Please allow time between your submission and approval for the bot as it may take a few days to process.

If your map is already on the bot and it needs an update, please post a comment on the feedback thread with the new version.

Thank you!

Feedback Thread: http://ffamasters.net/index.php?topic=2583.new#new

When contest is over, the winner will be in the permanent rotation of FFArena. Then DV and Ugrilainen will add two more that went far into the competition and think would suit ladder needs / with FML opinion being highly regarded.

These should be good:
Retvizan Island v. 1.13
Greenville Woods v1
Equilrium

Normandy is not a melee map at the moment. It currently has custom ability/item/unit data set. Needs an update to get it to be a Melee map.

Retvizan is also technically not a melee map, but its because of a custom loading screen. No other custom data is set on the map besides max gold mine count increased (for no apparent reason though, custom gameplay constraints should be turned off in the next update).

Fjord has not been tested by an admin as far as I know of, I didn't get a chance to look at it.

@Cinderfire

Ironforge is a very interesting map. It really shows off your skill in combing doodads together to make a really great looking theme. It has a cool RPG dungeon feel to it. However, I don't think its appropriate for melee games in its current form. Bases are small, there isn't a lot of wood, no expansions, small pathways and waygates are big concerns.

I'm excited for Gilneas though! Never had a 7 player map before. One thing to keep in mind is the end spots might have an unfair advantage due to not being surrounded like the other 5 start locations.

I have a question regarding the items for different levels.

For the map scenario I'm using right now "Cityspace" the items that appear level 4 are shown on the first image.

These items seem fine to me, except that Legion of Doom Horn is in here, and I remember in other maps this item was considered level 5; in other words, it wouldnt appear in level 4 permanent items just like shown in the next two images.

Even some of the lvl 4 items that are charged such as the drake dragon, golem, fellhound, appear available on my map, but when I look at other maps, these items are too strong, hence considered lvl 5 charged and what I get for lvl 4 charged are only stones of health, book of necro, hurricane rod, ankra of resurrection, etc.

Does anyone know why these items appear in different levels ? shouldn't they all be on the same level for any map scenario/layout ?

They are on the same level for every map scenario. The thing that changes the item tier is the patch the editor considers within the editor.

Go to scenario > map settings(or options, don't know how it is translated) > at the bottom of the window there is a game data thing, setting it to "Assault - Last patch" will make item tiers to show properly.

I have a question regarding the items for different levels.

Does anyone know why these items appear in different levels ? shouldn't they all be on the same level for any map scenario/layout ?

They are on the same level for every map scenario. The thing that changes the item tier is the patch the editor considers within the editor.

Go to scenario > map settings(or options, don't know how it is translated) > at the bottom of the window there is a game data thing, setting it to "Assault - Last patch" will make item tiers to show properly.

thank you man, appreciate it :)

I have a questions:

If I put a Market Place in my map, is the item rotation based on how many creep camps have a certain item? For example, let's say I have 6 creep camps that drop level 5 items, but I have 8 creep camps that drop lvl 4 items, does this mean that there will be more lvl 4 items in the Market place or will they be equally balanced?

I think so. As those creeps are killed, those items can start appearing in marketplace

oh, ok ty.

Is it a good idea to have all kinds of items, of different levels so that the use of the Market Place is not too imbalanced? you know, being able to buy the aura items, or lvl 4,5 items frequently.

Usually a map has all kinds of items anyway, I doubt there would be a sudden jump from lv3 to lv5-6 items.

The problem with the marketplace are mainly charged items (especially lv5+), as they can be rebought over and over.
Permanent items that are good lategame are auras, that are a 1 time buy, and hero/situation specific items (eg rune bracers vs ud).

Nice map

I noticed that you used a lot of small doodads that have pathing, they feel quite annoying to manouver around sometimes

Also noticed, there is a broken ramp in the south east

Last thing, you may want to check the natural expansions. The treeline is way too thin and creeps aggro from beyond the trees.

No map/balance changes, but had to make the map bigger outide the camera boundaries to prevent a FATAL ERROR caused by flying units at the map edges.

When I look at the bottom right corner of my map it says:

Melee map: No

reason: Non-default game data set has been specified.

Does anyone know why this appears? If I'm correct a melee map show show the two swords with a round shield as icon while non melee is like a yellow gear, right?

Please help :D

Nvm, I got it to work. It shows as melee now, but I don't understand what's the difference in "Game Data set" the options: Default (based on map melee status) and Melee (Latest Patch).
I'd had selected the latter which is why it wasn't considered melee until I switched back to Default and then it became melee map  :icon_confused:.

Btw, for the loading screen, if I use a different picture that is not the default image or even from the campaign, does that turn my map into a non-melee map?.
And also what exactly is the difference between melee and non-melee, they both seem fine to me when I play.

Using a picture will set it to non melee.

Melee is just a WE and W3 classification, the map can play exactly normal(melee) without being classified as such (all w3arena maps are not considered melee for example).

So as long as you do not change important gameplaywise setting, you're fine.

There practically isn't a difference between melee and non-melee as long as you did not touch any data that affects real gameplay. As for touching the loading screen, the game will turn non-melee. I suggest your map stay within the boundary of melee as skeptical players would hold doubt on it because in a player point of view, he cannot be sure what part of data has been manipulated.

Yeah, I want to do another cast this week and im aiming for tonight being the day. I have a lot of maps to cover still! I'll try to squeeze yours in at the end again.

Also Blast covered the Melee map distinction pretty well. For the purposes of this tournament, we do have melee maps as a requirement. However, we'll allow custom loading screens as long as no other changes are made.

I think the starting spawns have little room for all the production buildings that are require for a proper macro ffa player. I mean for 1v1 or 2v2 where u only need 1 or 2 buildings of each kind then it is fine, but for ffa you need 10 or more production buildings. Maybe change some of the unbuildable ground or make the starting spawns a little more open (more room for building placement).

Would the problem be solved if I expand the main by replacing cliffs with wood?
or do you think the trees should be removed for more space?

Purity update 1/27

-Minor creep changes at Merchants  lv11 > lv15
-Minor item changes at Merchants lv2 charge > lv2 charge + lv2 book

-Main a bit bigger (to put one more big building)
this was done by removing cliffs and replacing them with trees.

-More tree walls to shops and labs (Creeps will no longer rush to you!)

-Map description added (Please check if there are any grammatical errors!)

*The numbers behind the name do not mean anything. I just change them whenever I give some changes to the map. They are totally random so don't care about em!

So, from a quick look in the editor my assumption is you are going for a map which is all about getting big as shit and becoming a wrecking ball. Big items, big armies, dragons, all that stuff.

Couple of things I noticed:
-Shop creeps aren't on Camp mode for some reason
-The ramps at the observatories are very sloppy looking
-For a map with the theme of "go big or go home" the map is super flat. I would expect some ridiculous hills and valleys that match the theme.
-Despite the theme, the items still dont make much sense:
-Not that this will affect us too much, but the main base camp is a level 6 and a level 3 item from a 22 power camp.
-The red ogre camps - also level 22 camp - drops a level 7, level 2 and a mana ward.
-On the flip side, you have a 36 power camp with a comparable drop to the 22s (level 6, 2 and a watcher ward)
-Its probably intentional, but you can't walk past the mercenary camps to get to the healing well - you'll need to creep them first.
-100% unguarded dragon roost. I assume its intentional, but wow.

Thanks for the feedback! Here's updated version.

- Fixed shop creeps to be camp mode
- Added some more height/depth to hills all around the map
- Reworked a number of items and creeps
--- Fountain creeps are a bit easier to match the items, which I kept as level 6 drop + watcher rune, because I value watcher rune quite highly here. I'm just worried this can be crept with solo blademaster
--- Middle creeps are more balanced for the items they drop
--- Starting spawn creeps give weaker items
--- Removed the power-up items from the large ogre, but kept the level 7 drop because that guy is a level 11 beast with 3k hp, definitely hardest creep on the map despite lower level of the camp
- Yes it's intentional you must kill the mercenary creeps on the way to the fountain, but they are pretty easy
- Added some dragons to protect the roost

Can you elaborate what you mean by the ramps looking sloppy? Is it that they are straight across without height adjustment? I was trying to go for the appearance of stairs.

New version seems much improved. :D Double Merc camp will be fun I think! I need to get a game going on this map.

On the stair thing, I was referring mostly to the top left and bottom right most ones. They don't look anything like stairs due to the way the editor works - when there is an angle it makes sharp spikes instead of smooth surfaces. :/ I'm not really sure how to achieve a good stair look honestly, maybe one of the Hive guys knows a way.

It wasnt until I downloaded the maps from the bot, I think, that the maps obtained the (8) and (6) in front of their names. Sorry for spam, tweaked Boomtown once more to version 1.3 based on latest feedback:

- Made one of the goldmines have harder creeps
- Made most goldmine creeps non-camp mode (except the one closest to base to allow building without trouble)
- Reduced the gold count in a number of mines
- Tidied up a few more cosmetic things

Deadline is rapidly approaching! I am going to set the deadline to be Feb 12th at exactly 12pm EST. Any submissions and updates past that time will be void!

Also since we have so many submissions, it is going to take a long time to go through these maps and review. There will be a new thread for the results of the contest and we will post reviews for maps in alphabetical order. I'm not entirely sure at this point if we will be posting them all at once or if they will be done as reviews are completed.

Thank you everyone who completed a map! Its been a lot of fun to play these maps and see their progress! We plan to host a ton of great content with your maps in the coming weeks so stay tuned for that. :)

Can't wait for the results  :icon_cool:

Did that 'final' thing with an IH game for every candidate in the final become a thing? If so make someone stream it on twitch!

Sadly, due to Plagiarism and blatant cheating all of Mr.LighTs maps will be removed from the competition. Retvizan island is just "Monsoon" with grass and Altai Mountains is the Blizzard map "Legends" with snow.

This also means that Normandy - which was a map with a very good chance at winning - will also be withdrawn. We are unable to determine if this map was plagiarized or not but it seems very likely due to the amount of time he spent creating the map and his previous maps. Fjord is also being withdrawn.

For proof, please see Blast870's blog page: http://blog.naver.com/blast870

Thanks!
