Title: FML Stream
Post by: FML|Mage on April 30, 2013, 10:28:49 pm
Ok, as many of you probably know we're working on getting an FML Stream/Shoutcast together.  We will be shoutcasted by yours truly and :USA: :ne: Mog[Skynet] primarily, though we will certainly have some other guests on it from time to time.

The videos can be found here: http://www.twitch.tv/ffamastersleague

I'll post in this thread when we're live so people can watch, hopefully we'll have a better system in the future.

Please post all thoughts, comments, critique, or praise in here.  We want to hear it all.  Pure flaming will be deleted, but negative critique phrased in a constructive manner is welcome!  To see the previous casting that Mog and I did look in the videos section of the stream.  I'll edit it to the appropriate parts sometime tomorrow.

Thanks everyone, and please remember to click the purple follow button below the video to follow us!  The more followers we have, the more publicity we get  :icon_biggrin:

Finished up casting a pretty exciting game, dragged a bit in the middle but we managed to finish it despite my attempts to lag out, and and super sore throat.

Mage and Mog amazing shoutcasting team.

They balance well between commenting the action live, giving some backgrounds on players, doing some prospection on what is going to happen, guessing what is in these players head and giving some tips about ffa.

They dont seem to have any pause struggling for their words. You feel their friendship, their respect for each other and for the players. None is overtalking, both gets about 50/50 of the shoutcast time.

well done.

Room for improvement :

- learning on how to pronounce my name.
- knowing a bit more about languages : ugrilainen is absolutely not a french word, but a finnish word (hi Rain) :)

Great job casting, listened to it all (skimming some parts).  I like the combo of both of you, kept it entertaining.

Couple of points:

-Not using my gold when I had around 8k 40 food did bite me in the ass like you said, Gz. came with 100 food and almost killed me.

-From here though, I wasn't playing dead.  I only had 2k gold once I made an army and it wouldn't make sense to spend any more on units vs DR and elves as human.  Better to use the gold on heroes/buildings.

-In the end of the game when I said "wanted to see if you could kill it" you guys said "now he's getting cocky" and it was abnoxious or annoying.  I wasn't talking about the Panda though, I was talking about my island of towers that no one noticed (even the obs) on the right side of the map.  I had built 8 guard towers on one of the islands with a peasent and zepplin and I wanted to see if it could be killed.  WIthout a chim I don't think they all could be reached with Panda flame.  That's what I was referring too.

-Now I will switch my style of play and no longer withhold gold.  It has been a strategy to combat excessive teaming because it seems like every game I will do well initially and have the advantage then get teamed down.  Winning late game with gold is a way... but I won't play like that anymore.  1 because everyone assumes I have gold until I am "defeated" and two its just not as fun and I am going to use more force and decisive thinking in the 3 way when getting teamed.

Lastly, outside of withholding gold you cannot say I manip much in comparison.  I battle and fight and late game I tend to hold on to gold and try to get the attention away from me.  I'm not trying to get others to team with me excessively or blatantly lie about different situations.  Still, I see how holding on to gold can be bothersome (even though magadansky manips as much as anyone) and not the cleanest style of play.

I re enginerred my game after last seasons finals and won my first three FML games and the ladder season 2.  I am constantly adapting and will re engineer again for the future leaving out some points and focusing on new ones.  You won't be able to auto-assume much about my game any more which will make me more dangerous.  Or... maybe you still think that's just manip =)

THE GAME:

Gz. had a nice showing and is improving, picking up skills here and there from obsing he is turning into a FFA player.  Different things here and there he will learn with experience.  I agree with Mog and Mage's comments.

Ugri - Unfortunate game for you, but you should know fiends do not do well vs Chippo.  If you can hit him early with 80 food you can do well, but once he can make 100 food with higher level DR/Panda fiends are worthless vs elf.

Rkk - Not a bad rush, as you can see it could've been the game early on.  I wasn't expecting bear/dryad with my rifle/caster based army.  However I was able to hold you off and secure an advantage at 80 food as the shouters pointed out.

I enjoy this hero combo most fighting in fights, its really awesome.  Originally shown by htrt, I choose devotion aura instead of divine shield because at level 2 you get +3 armor.  This is combo with 3 armor upgrades and inner fire is a rediculous amount of armor.  One major point I missed was getting heal spray instead of acid bomb.  High level paladin heal, haze on panda (debuff for less incoming damage) and heal spray combined with high hp and armor units is a defensive juggernaut.

In this game I made the right decisions, generally, in the 3 way to win the game.  This is my weak point in my opinion usually so I was happy with the result.

GG nice shoutcast, looking forward to more.  FaH-Q- coming soon.   :icon_biggrin:

Very much enjoyed listening to the cast - I should have been asleep hours ago.

I think it's extremely interesting to see what people think im thinking and compare it with what I actually am.  Most often it was right, or eventually right.  I agree with most things they said - except that I suicide a lot, which has happened a few times recently, but I have actually never intentionally suicided a single FML match, just a few cgs where I was really pissed off.

Two small things I would note - A lot of the time when I was attacking Gz at his main, it was because I was trying to force a tp, because I couldn't fight him straight up and he was going to my main, which I would not have been able to defend.  I have been known to get too chatty when people aren't doing what I think is the right decision, as casters pointed out, so I was just trying to stay alive as best I could and keep him from killing my base.  Also I kept hippos around me because I was scared of hidden gryphs ^_^.

Overall I think the stream was very successful and I hope you two keep doing it for a long time - very good discussions and very good analysis.  Ultimately people will have things to say about what you said about them (as seksi's book, and my paragraph, show) but you can't honestly be expected to know exactly what's going on in someone's head, and the fact that you were very close most of the time is impressive.

M&M#1!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I am also very pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to shoutcast with Mage. I thought we might be awkward together at first because we wouldn't have chemistry; but so far it has worked out surprisingly well for us. This has me pleasantly surprised, and I'm sure we can improve as well.

@Seksi: I apologize if some of my comments seemed rude or condescending about your playstyle. I never really finished what I wanted to say, because I kept seeing battles or something more important to point out. Basically, what I was trying to say was you have shown many games having hidden gold, or feigning death. This is, of course, not an uncommon thing in FFA. Not saying you are the only one who has done it, just that you have won some memorable games from it, so I would think people would be more active with their scouting of you in late game situations such as the one this game produced. I don't think I ever really got my complete out in the cast, so for that I apologize. Also in regards to my statements on manip--I think manip is an important skill in FFA. Maga manips very much, but he has somehow mastered doing it in a logical way. One where even though you KNOW he is manipping, he still laces his manip with truthful statements, making players think or re-evaluate a situation in ways they may not have previously been doing. This past season, you showed incredible improvement. When you first entered FML, you didn't manip enough, and got teamed often. Then you flipped to the opposite end of the spectrum and your manip became too obvious. Then in the past few months you've seemed to really balance your play out and find a nice inbetween point, which has shown in your strong results.

Oh, and you are correct, neither Mage nor myself ever saw your island towers. It is really hard to see brown on that map :)

@RKK: ty for the feedback, you are correct, we can't know exactly what is running through someones head. I like to try and see things from others' perspectives as best as I can, but of course, I (and Mage) will be wrong from time to time. I will try not to be overly critical, or offensive, but objectively give honest analysis as best I can.

lol - I would have to say this is the strongest piece of feedback to emphasize.

@Mog - What I meant by my comment is that you guys did a great job figuring out what everyone was thinking, and the fact that I was only able to pick out 2 things is extremely impressive.  Seksi, and other players like him, will always have a volume of things to say about comments people make on their playing, I wouldn't change a thing about the way you cast this game.  What's important is that you highlight the interesting moments and give people a perspective to compare it against, which you did.  I for one, learned a lot about how people view my actions, how they are interpreted, and got a number of good ideas about how to use that to my advantage for next time.  Even if you're initial assessment of what I was thinking wasn't exactly right, it gives me a great opportunity to learn how actions like that will be interpreted in the future.

In summary: In my opinion this was brilliant and you should take defensive comments from people about things you say with a grain of salt - you're only saying what you see and cannot be expected to be perfect.

Mog, you're good.  I appreciated the shoutcast and you guys did a great job.  I don't know about volumes but like rkk said it's cool to hear others views and how actions or players are interpreted throughout the game.  I like to give my analysis and enjoy hearing others as well.  It's helpful and interesting.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, much appreciated.

@Seksi: Bring back pwnage Seksi!  It's always a lot of fun to just watch you dominate with high level heroes and take on 2v1's :)  Also nice comments, much appreciated when you take the actual time to give us that much feedback.

@Gz.  Lot's of stuff to improve on, but also focus on the positive.  You really did play a hell of a game, and at this level it doesn't take a huge mistake to screw you up.  Also, dedication!

@Ugri:  Maybe we'll learn it maybe we won't =D  Thanks for the comments and praise though, much appreciated since we're just getting started.

@RKK: Thanks for the comments!  The insight about the hippos especially was extremely useful for me.  I never even thought about hidden gryphs and only saw them as food for the alchy!

Overall, I'm extremely pleased about the feedback we've received so far.  For the second time casting together I have to say I think Mog and I blend really well together.  Our total skype call (pre and post game included) was two and a half hours and I never felt like we had long awkward breaks where we couldn't find anything to say.  It truly is a pleasure to cast with him, and I'd like to personally thank him for bringing the idea back to my attention.  Without his enthusiasm I wouldn't have worked so hard to get it working again.  I think it's safe to say that you'll be hearing more from us in the future!

Also one question to those that have watched.  I started lagging a bit at one point, how bad was that on the stream and how long did it last?  In addition were there any technical errors that occurred?  How did I do following as an obs.  Any tips on what you'd like to see more of or less of?  It's obviously a bit hard to know what other people want when I'm just following my own thoughts ^-^

Thanks again, and be sure to pass it along and have others watch!

Lag lasted between 3-10 seconds, only a couple times. (maybe 2-3)

Obs view was quite good.  Only like 1 or 2 times where I wanted to be looking at something else while you were engrossed in discussion, but it could have been that I wanted you to pay attention to me because I'm an attention whore.  Overall you did very well, it's tricky when there are battles going on at different places at the same time, so figuring out which one to watch is really a coin flip.

Things I'd like to see more of - if you ever watch husky & day9 cast together for sc2, husky does the real time exciting battle commentary then day9 goes into strategy discussion.  I don't know if that dynamic would make sense for you two but it is quite effective.  I think FFA is a very strategy based game type so it would be natural for both of you to discuss it together.  I really liked the battle commentary though, I don't think any important fights were missed.  But in terms of things I'd like to see more of, I guess some in depth micro discussion and choices, why people move their armies the way they do, positioning, etc.  You did do plenty of it, but more couldn't hurt  :icon_biggrin:.

Things I'd like to see less of - hmm, it's hard to say, because I really liked what you chose to talk about - I'll have to watch some more casts and let you know what jumps out at me, so far nothing to complain about.

"Any tips on what you'd like to see more of or less of?  It's obviously a bit hard to know what other people want when I'm just following my own thoughts ^-^"

So far, so good.  You both provided your thoughts and views throughout the game in a variety of areas which was nice.  A couple things worth talking about, in my opinion:

1) Early game macro/build order.  This is commonly overlooked when watching a replay by most players because you are looking at everyone and getting into the game.  However, this is what I pay attention to most early on.  One of my strengths is I have really good early build/creep orders which puts me in position to engage or defend in the first fight.  Things like the amount of workers before teching, how many on wood while expoing and before teching, the timing of expo, tech, shredder, level 3 etc.

2) Creeps: Which creeps on the chosen map are most valuable and generally an order to go for.  Ex: Based on spawns, which red creeps should you grab first and is it better to creep around the middle or edges? What about items, which creep camps will benefit specific races more then others?

3) Items and Unit combination.  Commenting on how a player builds his heroes and why or why not certain items are good in FFA.  Unit combination is obviously key, it could be discussed how to counter certain armies and why or why not a player is using different units.

4) In battle decisions.  Some more notes on which moves a player will emphasize as a priority in battle and why.

These are more specific things that would add more helpful information to an already great shoutcast team.  Some players will have more information on these then others, but everyone will have a different opinion and insight on these kind of things would always be interesting.  It would definately be cool to have players come on as a guests with you two, I would like to contribute my thoughts to an already successful team =D

Those are my 2c, again nicely done I was impressed so far.

Guests would be awesome! Would have to do it right though. I really think 3 person shoutcast teams are too much, so if there is a guest, it should be like an interview or something. With 3 people it get clumsy and people talk over each other.

Very informative cast guys! I was watching it till 12:30 last night, haha. It really helped me see where I went wrong in that game and what I can do better. I really hadn't even thought that renaud might want to backstab and I wish I had seen it. Didn't notice him attacking Persuade at all. Unsure of what happened to my scout beetle at the expo... it must have died and I didn't look. Big mistake on my part. I have to work on that! Overall, I think I played very well and the game was a lot of fun. Thanks for casting guys!

Pretty good idea - I think the 3way is easily the most difficult part of a FFA - might be cool to do a couple different ganes and show examples of what to do, what not to do, and such... learning experiences and all.  "Perfect teaming" is something that few games actually achieve, but all should strive for.

3 ways are actually simple in concept, but difficult in execution:

1: REMOVE all grudges from when the game wasnt' a 3 way
2: SCOUT and determine the strongest player in the game
3: ATTACK said player.
4: REPEAT steps 2 and 3.

If done right, teaming will occur and everyone will eventually get teamed. There are some underhanded/sneaky moves that people do to help them win like: hiding armies, manipulation, lying about gold, hiding an expansion, etc etc etc... all of this is countered by scouting well. If YOU are the strongest player and you know it, work on killing the 2nd strongest player.

King of Rage.

Not actually going to hunt rush reno... lost temper after getting chatted hard against after an attempt to take me out first in the cg right before >_>...  looked like a revenge move to me, but after reviewing game def would have done the same thing.

Just a note, Mog and I will not be able to cast the game on Sunday.  However, Mog and I will not be watching the game Sunday, we will isolate ourselves from the FML world for the required 36 hours, and then we will cast the game from a replay on Monday night!

Why no voices lately? The music and mass clicking can be disturbing :)

I can do voice stream if you need, would be good to practice a couple of games before the seminfinals and finals games.

Real life commitments =/  I work from 8:00-21:00 EST and Mog (who lives in AZ) often doesn't finish work until 23:00 or 24:00 EST.  We'd love to be able to do more, and we're hopeful that we will be able to before long.  We'll be doing a shoutcast Monday night though, so make sure to tune in :)

And yeah, we'll try to put together a good time to do a live shoutcast of an FML custom game.

bit of advice
maybe lower wc3's sound?
could barely hear mog over the Sound effects, and your voice was super quiet

otherwise loved it!

Thanks!  Def need to do that, and will change it in my default settings tonight so that I make sure it's low in all future games!

P.S. Moved your post over here since I was dumb and forgot to lock other topic >.>

All advice, criticism, love, and critique should be posted here if you can though.  Thanks for listening!  make sure to subscribe <3

Newest shoutcast is out... it isn't our best attempted ever.  We had several technical errors... but hey, it's something!

I think the guy who did the solo-broadcast for most of the game did a really good job. Sad that the sound fucked up.

Funniest watch in a while because of the "ofcourse Firedragon will win this" "how many points DFM got? 11?" "25." HAHAHA

keep 'em coming, you're doing a great job

K, I plan to shoutcast a game tomorrow as a special thank you to all the people that have helped us put together the FML Facebook Page! (https://www.facebook.com/ffamasters)

For those that haven't yet, go like it!

We need 4+ players for the game tomorrow, which I will be shoutcasting with a surprise guest.  4,6, or 8 players will work.  Post here if you can and want to play, and I'll add your name.  Game will be at 19:00 EST on July 25th!

Just a note, we've gotten 350 views on the recorded copy of the stream game and had over 100 at various points while live.  Thank you to everyone who has helped this succeed, we'll be doing a new one soon (since last one didn't work out).

Just added another shoutcast, this one with Worpex.  It was a blast and really enjoyed not being on my own again!  Props to Worpex for doing so well (in my opinion) on one of his first casts.  Since it's a new shoutcast duo I would really appreciate any comments good or bad about the shoutcast.  Games can be found here. yo Mage,
didn't know where to write and didn't want to make a new thread, but:

Thank you so much for the continual uploading of videos on youtube. Your effort is showing and you've improved A LOT as a caster - mainly shows when you're casting with other people :D

But just wanted to say thanks :)

Really appreciate it Cheerio!  Glad to hear that I've improved, it's obviously a bit hard for me to tell myself.  I really enjoy casting with other people much more than alone so that's probably why.

Thanks for the input and I hope you continue to enjoy them, I do this for those that listen so it makes it all worth it to hear they enjoy it!

Just a note, Wrecktify and myself will be casting a game tonight at 21:00EST.

It will be available in VOD form on YouTube afterwards, but should also be available to watch live on YouTube and Twitch.  If viewers could give me feedback on stream quality it would be greatly appreciated.  I've recently moved and hopefully there should be a significant uptick in the quality.
